The SSW Winter Series is returning for 2020-21 season!

We are working with clubs to generate some winter series racing whilst being mindful of following Government advice regarding COVID-19. We're hopeful that several pursuit events will be able to run this coming winter. So far we have a few provisional dates for your diaries:

25th October - NDYC Wrecker (North Devon YC)

8th November - Penzance Pirate (Penzance SC)

6th December - Christmas Cracker (Paignton SC)

Mother Nature threw all she had at the 2019-20 SSW Winter Series.  We experienced wild storms, big tides, freezing temperatures and a good dose of sunshine and light breezes too.  The Series, sponsored by Allen Sailing, is made up of 10 long distance pursuit races, each hosted by a different sailing club in the southwest UK.  Throughout the series, competitors are also entered into several prize draws to win custom built launching trollies by Admiral Trailers, and they can also sco...

THE FINAL RACE OF THE SSW WINTER SERIES, THE ROADFORD ROC...

The Torbay Tornado has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.  Race organisers have deemed the risk too high to staff, competitors and helpers, with several helpers already in self-isolation.

The Roadford Rocket on the 28th March is currently due to go ahead as scheduled, however the situation will be constantly monitored over the coming days and weeks.

The storms battering the UK have unfortunately led to the cancelation of R8, the Channel Chop.

With more bad weather and strong gusts of over 35-40mph forecast for this coming weekend, Portishead YSC committee was left with no option but to cancel the Channel Chop for 2020.

However, it isn't all bad news! Roadford have announced that they will be able to re-schedule the Roadford Rocket to Saturday 28th March.  This race will therefore become the last in our SSW Winter Ser...

Unfortunately due to a very severe weather forecast, the organisers of the Roadford Rocket have been forced to cancel the race that was due to be held this Sunday (9th Feb)

Options are being looked at for postponing the Rocket to a later date.

We move forward to the next race on our Series calendar, the Channel Chop on the 16th Feb.  Entries are open - https://www.pysc.org.uk/open/

The Exe Sails and Covers Starcross Steamer got underway this weekend with 76 boats on the water in very light Northerly winds.  Temperatures were close to freezing, but the wintery sun shone over the estuary, making it a beautiful sight.

A Firefly sailed by championship pair Jono Pank and Angus Cook lead the fleet away after a 15minute delay to the official start time.  It looked like a day for the slower boats, but there would be surely be strong challenges from large Merlin and RS...

29 Nov 2019

In the days building up to the 2019 NDYC Wrecker, the wind was uncharacteristically light, very light.  With an easterly wind offshore it was looking like a difficult day.

The start line was kept close to the Instow shore giving the slower boats a chance to get out of the tide close in but there was more breeze further out.  The course took the fleet of 26 round a Rowing Gig race and out into the main Taw Torridge estuary.  Soon spinnakers were set down wind and the fleet was...

Porthpean Pursuit - 9th November 2019

The big Cornish double header weekend finally started after a 1-week weather delay.  The postponement was caused by storms that brought 2-3m swells crashing into the Cornish south coast and winds in excess of 40 knots.  Rapid reorganisation by both clubs saw the opening events put back to 9/10 November.

So, the weekend started with Porthpean in sunshine and a F2-3 offshore wind, but the forecast was to be livelier come race time.  The turnou...

Unfortunately due to storm force winds forecast in Cornwall this weekend, the race organisers have had to postpone both the Porthpean Pursuit and Penzance Pirate for 1 week.

We plan to run both races next weekend (9th-10th Nov).

Porthpean Pursuit will run as scheduled but now on Saturday 9th November (11am briefing, 12.00 noon start) Camping and dinner will be available on booking as before.

Penzance Pirate will be on Sunday 10th November with an updated start time of 12.00 noo...
