Exe Sails & Covers Starcross Steamer
The Exe Sails Starcross Steamer took place on 5th February and yet again proved to be a great success. The weather though chilly, remained dry and a good breeze kept up throughout the event. The first boat, a Mirror skippered by Eric Taylor and crewed by Aoife Mooney was the first to set off at 11.00. The final starters, two RS 800 started a whole hour (and three minutes) later!
The 2.5hr pursuit race was the first of the 2017 Winter Steamer series had 99 starters in total, a fantastic turnout on such a chilly February day. Plenty of people watched on from the beach and relative warmth of the club house, sustained by the hot tea, pasties from the tearoom.
By 1pm, a clear leader had moved away from the pack. Skipper Peter Barton and Chris Feibusch from Lymington Town Sailing Club in an RS 800 flew past boats and opened up a commanding lead over the rest of the field. By 13.30, they were the only boat to have completed five laps of the course, finishing comfortably in first place. A great battle for second took place between Chris Gill and Adam Broughton in a Fireball, Colin Stephens and Mick Greig in an Osprey and Mark Barnes and Charlotte Jones in a B14 but eventually the windy conditions took their toll, and the faster boats prevailed: Chris Gill/Adam Broughton getting second and Mark Barnes/Charlotte Jones finishing third.
