UK Laser Masters Inland Championships 2017
Now in its third year, the UK Laser Masters Inland Champs took place at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club in 2017. There was a record number of entries, with 67 Lasers initially entered for the six race championship.
The conditions were challenging on the lake for the earlier races, with light breezes that shifted regularly. Unsurprisingly therefore, the locals came out on top in race one, with David Hynes taking the win, followed home by Julian Cooke and Peter Sherwin (all of Chew Valley Lake SC).
Race two saw a shift in this local momentum, with Hamish Gledhill (West Riding SC) coming through to take the win in front of Jon Lewis and Dave Freeman (Queen Mary SC). The final race of the day saw the order change again, with the first big result for overall Laser winner, Alan Davis (Oxford SC) who took the Race 3 win. Second was Patrick Hamilton (Burwain) and third again was Dave Freeman.
On the second day, the breeze built again, almost reaching 20 knots. David Binding (Weir Wood SC) thrived in the conditions, leading the 4th race all the way to a win. Hamish Gledhill got second and the consistent Roger O'Gorman (Queen Mary SC) finished third. Race 5 was won by Stuart Hudson (Keyhaven SC), with Alan Davis in second and Gledhill taking third, putting him in an excellent position going into the final race. It wasn't meant to be though, as Gledhill got a BFD, leaving him to count a 21st placing in the first race.
In the end, David Hynes took the win in race 6, with Stuart Hudson second and Roger O'Gorman third. This final result meant the overall Champion was Alan Davis who finished in the top 6 in his five counting races. Roger O'Gorman was just 2 points behind in second, and David Hynes finished third.
