North Devon YC Sailors Shine at the Sprint15 Nationals
Shanklin Sailing Club on the Isle of Wight hosted the Spring15 National Championships last weekend (19th-21st May), and it proved to be a fantastic regatta for the sailors from North Devon Yacht Club who had a strong turnout amongst the 32 entries for the event.
Overall eleven North Devon boats made the trip, and for Sam Heaton in particular, it was well worth the long journey. After the first two races, Heaton had picked up a 2nd and 1st, leaving him at the top of the overall standings overnight, on level points with local sailor Paul Grattage (SSC). Fraser Manning (NDYC) was not far behind, taking 4th and 3rd to leave him in third place overall.
Day 2 continued to go well for Heaton, finishing 3rd and 1st in the next two races and finishing the day with a 2nd place. Grattage was matching him and again they went into the overnight standings on level points. After a 4th place in race 3, Manning faltered in race 4, finishing 10th but pulled out a recovery in the race 5 with a third place behind his clubmate.
On the final day it was all to play for at the top and the pressure was on Heaton and Manning to maintain their fantastic form. Manning shone, taking two second places to secure fourth overall but unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be for Heaton. He finished with a 6th in race 6, whilst his rival Grattage picked up another race win, which all but sealed the overall victory with the final race to go. The two leaders had a good scrap in the final race, finishing 7th (Heaton) and 8th (Grattage) but all was said and done by then. Grattage would take the championship, but Heaton can be very proud of an impressive second place.
