The 2017/8 SSW Lakes series comprised 3 events, Roadford Rocket, Sutton Bingham Icicle and Wimbleball Exmoor Beastie, but following the Beast from the East, part 3, the Beastie disappeared under several feet of snow.
The Rocket achieved a record 64 entries on the water with the inaugural Sutton Bingham Icicle a creditable 32 entries. Sailors universally commenting favourably on the series with many travelling from all parts of the region to take part.
TracAce™ GPS tracking systems were used on both events and the races can be replayed by following the link https://www.sailingsw.co.uk/tracace
With just 2 events in the short series, Steve Cockerill achieved an unassailable lead after the Icicle taking 2 firsts. At the Rocket he took the lead from Firefly sailor Angus Cook and Ellie Hopper in the last few hundred meters. Sutton Bingham was just as challenging, as RS Aero 5 World Champ Andrew Frost pushed Steve all the way until the last leg or two.
Second overall was Phantom sailor Simon Hawkes on 11 points, showing constancy pays with a 5th and 6th. Just one point behind was fellow Phantom sailor Nick Orman, also from Castle Cove SC. Angus in his Firefly, sailing with son Alfie found the going at Sutton Bingham tough dropping him to 4th overall, while the D-Zero of Stacey Bray from Porthpean SC took a creditable 5th overall.
With 96 sailors racing in the series and 32 different classes and 29 clubs represented, the first SSW Lakes Series was nothing short of a great success.
