The event took place in Cardiff bay alongside the Volvo Ocean race yachts where over one hundred of the UK’s best young sailors had gathered to see who would become National champions in the Pro and Sport races.

Albert Gilmore from Torbay Boys Grammar School who sails out of Paignton Sailing Club sailed some great races in very challenging conditions to take the top spot in the Pro’s becoming the 2018 RS Tera Pro National champion. William James who is due to start at Torbay Boys Grammar School in September also sails out of Paignton sailing club took the First boy award in the Tera Sport class. Albert said, “It was really shifty conditions and the key to winning was being consistent on the water”. Prizes were awarded by Volvo Ocean Race/Team Sky 2018 crew Bleddyn Mon.

Both Albert and William sail with the South West Youth Sailing Academy, a local not for profit sailing group helping youngsters progress from novice sailors to competitive racers under top coaches. The group was supported by The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (ASSF) who helped grow the project so more sailors could participate. Nick Ripley from Paignton Sailing Club said, “Its great to see so many of our young sailors participating and doing so well at National events in the Tera class and with our established Topper sailors doing really well we have established ourself as a really great place to progress on the water and to have some fun”
